¿o mera casualidad…?

EN INGLES.

Midsommar – the Movie

Forn Sed, our customs (Forn siðr, the translation «ancient custom» or «ancient tradition».) Is one of the bases and guides in ALVA. The customs of our ancestors are the basis for maintaining our faith in the world, using historical records, local folklore, everything that has resisted the influence of other institutions that are not Heathen and that they will try throughout the history erase it, presence and influence of our Gods, Goddesses and even worse manipulate the customs of our ancestors adapting to their own pleasure in the worst possible syncretism to create their religious Frankenstein. That said, so that it can be understood that our faith is not only lived-in blots, it is constant, it is one of the vital flows that we share together with the air. Pop culture has more and more the influence of our faith, but we also adapt these elements to a large extent, romancing them, making them part of the collective consciousness.

First of all, this is an article where, with religious eyes, we analyze a film that has many elements of our faith, but as we are talking about, they have been changed and adapted for the purpose of being a fairy tale for adults, we also agree that it has MANY but MANY » spoilers «.

Let’s talk about the main characters:

Dani Ardor, a psychology student that we found at the moment where she is broken inside, after she loses her family due to a terrible tragedy, the personage already had a difficult relationship with her boyfriend, Christian, before the event. This is where we have the first contact with sacrifice, a recurring and basic theme of the film, where Dani suffers the sacrifice of her family at the hands of her sister, who apparently suffers from depression, committing suicide and murdering her parents.

Christian, also a student but in anthropology, had the intention of ending the relationship, but after the tragedy he invites his girlfriend on a trip with his friends Pelle, Josh and Mark.

The community is one of the three main characters, since it is a commune in Hårga, in Hälsingland, it is a closed element, where we have the presentation of a life in community a living entity where there is the second presentation of the sacrifice, since we leave our individuality for the collective thought, for the happiness of the common whole. The sacred 3 (for the perfect 9) is seen, Dani, Christian and the Community, the Midsummer that will participate is one of the important ones in 9 years, the most important in 90 years, the perfect 9 again.

The film is not afraid to advance its story or provide us with future information at all times (the so-called foreshadowing), everything comes from the beautiful work of the designer Nille Svensson, we have the complete story graphically in the introduction of the film, its main points:

1 – The death of the family, their poisoning from the pipes.

2- Pelle in a tree looking and pointing at Dani’s pain and Christian’s lack of tact, trying to separate them and have Dani in no longer having real contact with what was weighting her down.

3- The group on the way to the community, Mark is the fool with his characteristic hat, Josh with a book since he is a scholar.

4- The elders in their own sacrifice for the community, their selflessness, also the throne of the queen of May

5- Last part, the election of the queen of May and the look at the Sun, fire of transformation.

In that mural we have the whole film, like the lines of the Norms under Yggdrasil, the important ali is already written, we walk from an important point to another important point.

Returning to another quick illustration is one of the paintings that we have in Dani’s house, she is herself already as the queen (of May) kissing the bear that is hers, her boyfriendChristian (who transmutes into the healing bear)

:

On arrival at the commune, we have the presentation of one of the many Runes, a large Othala upside down:

Othala the representation of family inheritance, family property as we see it in the runic poem:

A farm is very dear to every man,

if he can enjoy there at home

all of this is appropriate in constant prosperity.

This is the moment when they pass through the portal of the profane and reach the family, the community of all, we only have smiles, joy of the reunion of the one, changing the whole. The community receives the guests, the hospitality is extreme.

The metalanguage is very clear in the film, when Pelle explains the reflection of nature in all of us. Looking at nature and understanding that we are a part of it, is a simple but giant learning, the child in the Spring of life, the young in the Summer, the adults in the autumn and the elderly in the winter. Everything is a beautiful cycle, life walks towards death, but death is the door to a new life. The two characters Dani and Christian are in their summer, maybe in the Midsummer of their lives.

The morning after the first contact of the film’s viewer in a sacrifice outside the subjective cameras, but real and alive, felt and feared by many of the audience, he Ättestupa the ritual suicide where the elders of the community surrender to death to celebrate in life, it is only possible to have a real surrender to death if we truly live all our days, but we make it clear that this is an element of the film, we are all owners of ourselves but that is an element that we no longer it exists in tradition and was very little documented

A new foreshadowing now on a runic stele (Rökstenen):

Before the Ättestupa of 2 community members, two new members are selected, Dani (Raido) and Christian (Tiwaz, not directly him but making the new member possible). Let’s now look at the two runes:

Dani – Raido

The journey, the journey, the same that Dani is going to make, the transformation into the journey to reach her new home, to reach her new self.

Christian – Tiwaz.

The aspects adopted in the film are the final justice, the blood justice, the final onslaught, the war with its pain to provide the ultimate solution.

Thefilmmakers comment on aspects of criticism of nationalist fascism where any transgression of a custom always has the worst and maximum consequence that in the film is presented as the sacrifice of themselves. The characters who do not accept the community as the maximum truth and its customs are the marginal. The transgressions of the characters Mark (the fool) when he pees in the ancestor’s tree and Josh who in his desire to create the best thesis, takes photos of the sacred books of the community.

This element is important to stand out, since it is not the dedication to sacrifice but they are sacrificed for the community in understanding of rebirth, death is not an end, more death as an element of resurgence, Mark for the fire that cleanses for the new (Ragnarök) and Josh on earth (like the descent into Hella’s kingdom).

During final section of the film Dani is already accepted by the community, it only remains for her to accept and walk for the end of her path, when she receives the title of Queen of May, Royal Queen not the disgusting syncretism that some with disordered education do. The maximum purity in the extreme vitality of it, the real beauty, the new that comes to break the old.

Dani in his new path as queen brings the blessings to the plantation that brings the nourishment of the community, Christian also has his final role, which is to perpetuate and bring a new member to the community. The fertility of the earth, the fertility of the body, again in that we are participle and living elements in nature, we are not its owners, we are part of it.

We must accept we are not slaves of our destinies; we are masters of ourselves, but when we see Dani at the end of the film, she accepts that she has reached the end of that day, she has lost her family, now she has another one. And just like Pelle, she it is part of a whole. Christian, as in the painting that already defines his path (John Bauer’s poor little bear) ends his journey as a sacrifice to the life of the community. what a funny the wink on the part of the filmmakers when naming the protagonist who ends up being the main sacrifice Christian (Christian) could it be a reference to the Nordic invasions of the Catholic countries? Or mere chance …?
